Motivational support for following the corona measures during this 'people's marathon' has gradually decreased over the past weeks, from 81% at the start of the lockdown to 51% at the end of April. The motivation barometer at Ghent University has some good news: since May 1, voluntary motivation has increased slightly. After the first day of phase 1 of the exit strategy, 58% of the population fully supports the measures. The more motivating communication in recent days, together with the announcement of a number of easing measures, probably explain this positive effect. The National Security Council will meet again tomorrow. In the past, the communication from the National Security Council has always proved to be a pivotal motivating moment. We are formulating concrete recommendations for the government to motivate them to inform the population and to encourage them to keep up this 'people's marathon'. At the same time we encourage the population to reflect critically on their own motivation and to deeply anchor behavioural changes in a new lifestyle. Not only covid-19 is a contagious virus, so is the motivation of the population.
